Upholstery Care Guide

Thank you for choosing to purchase your new furniture from Fishpools. This guide will help you care for your investment and prolong its life.

General care

Gently brush or vacuum your upholstery regularly. Accumulated dirt will increase the wear and dull the colour. Refrain from sitting on the arms or on the edges of your new furniture

Abrasions and snags

Avoid sharp objects like buckles which can cause snags. If they occur, don't pull them, just cut them off carefully with scissors. Don't allow animals on your furniture and be aware that heavy clothing such as denim can be very abrasive.

Dye transfer

This may occur from non colour fast clothing items and is particularly noticeable on lighter leather or fabrics. This is not the fault of the material.

Stains

Spots and spills should be dealt with as soon as they happen by dabbing with a clean absorbent cloth. If your upholstery is protected by our stain warranty, please refer to the separate guarantee and cleaning advice

Cleaning

Dry clean upholstery unless the label says that it can be washed. We recommend cleaning at least once a year by a specialist third-party.

Sunlight and heat

Avoid positioning sofas and chairs close to heat sources or in prolonged sunlight. Failure to do so may cause excessive colour fading or ageing to the fabric.

Cushions

Reversible cushions should be turned and rotated regularly, with seams squared up to give even wear. Feather and fibre filled cushions must be turned and plumped to prevent flattening. Some cushions, especially fixed fibre filled arm cushions, may have settled during transit. Regularly plump and dress your cushions into shape.

Recliners

Open and close recliners with care and never force them. It is normal to have gaps between the actions to allow free movement and avoid abrasion.

Puckering and creasing

Some ranges may be manufactured using a 'relaxed design'. Puckering and creasing are a natural features of this style and can vary depending upon the chosen fabric.

Leather care

Leather upholstery is a natural material and will display unique characteristics that are entirely normal. These may include healed scars, variations in grain, wrinkles, veining and differences in tone, all of which are natural features and evidence of genuine leather.

Puddling - Over time, your leather sofa will naturally relax. With regular use, some puddling of the seats may occur due to the stretching of the leather and settlement of the interior fillings. This is completely normal. We recommend rotating seating positions to help maintain an even appearance.

Oil and grease - Leather can be sensitive to oily substances, including natural hand and hair oils. To help prevent discolouration, we recommend regularly wiping arm pads and headrests - particularly on high-backed or reclining furniture using a suitable leather cleaner.

Leather cleaning - Regular light cleaning with a specialist leather cleaner will help maintain the appearance of your furniture and protect it from everyday build-up of oils and dirt.

Waxed & aniline leather cleaning

These leathers are sensitive to spills and oily substances including hand and hair oil. We advise applying a protection cream prior to use and on a regular basis as instructed. This will increase durability and resistance to stains, spots, grease marks and spillages. Avoid using general polishes, creams or detergents. These natural leathers may mark which gives an aged authentic look. It may also present significant variation in shade and texture on the same hide. It is therefore not always possible to achieve a uniform match between adjoining panels. This is completely normal.

Fabric and velvet care

It is important that we highlight the normal and natural characteristics of fabric upholstery, and it is quite possible that these unique features may be present.

Shading - Crushing and shading of velvet and chenille fabrics will normally occur. Brushing the material will assist with this natural characteristic.

Pilling/Bobbling - Pilling is entirely normal on open weave fabrics. We recommend the use of a de-pilling machine to remove the surface bobbles if they appear.
