Bed & MattressCare

Thank you for choosing to purchase your new furniture from Fishpools. This guide will help you care for your investment and prolong its life.

Your new mattress may feel a little strange at first. The springs, upholstery or foam will be different to your old bed, so aloow time for the fillings to settle and your body to adjust.

Your mattress will take time to expand and settle, and you should avoid fitting bedding during this period. This will allow any moisture and its normal 'new smell' to evaporate.

Caring for your mattress

It is highly recommended to replace your base and mattress together as they are built to work in harmony, offering the correct level of comfort & support. If you do choose to buy a mattress on its own, it is important that your base is suitable for your new mattress, if it is deemed unsuitable it could void your guarantee.

If you have an existing platform top base or wooden slatted base, this will make a soft mattress feel firmer. An old sprung base is not suitable for a new mattress and it will affect the feel of the new mattress and its longevity as it will not offer the correct amount of support. If you are putting your mattress on a bed frame, the gap between the slats should be no more than 7.5cm (about 3 inches).

General Care

Please make sure you familiarise yourself with the manufacturer's care guides and the labels attached to your mattree. Do not roll or fold your mattress (even if it has been supplied rolled). This could distort or damage the internal filling. It is also recommended that you avoid sitting on the edge of your mattress, as this will cause damage to the mattress walls and reduce its lifepsan.

Protectors

We highly recommend the use of a mattress protector, to prevent stains and smells and will keep your mattress in excellent condition. Please note that a stained mattress will invalidate your guarantee.

Turning your mattress

Unless advised otherwise, you should turn your mattress weekly for the first eight weeks, then monthly after that. be sure to turn top to bottom and rotate end to end. 'No turn' mattresses should still be rotated end to end monthly. This will reduce any settlement that will happen naturally over time

Settlement

As your new mattress is designed to mould to the contours on your body, settling of the fillings is perfectly normal in your mattress, however, regular turning (if appropriate) and rotating will reduce the amount and will help keep the fillings supportive.

Airing your mattress

Once your new bed is in place and the packaging removed, let it air for a while before putting your mattress protector and bed linen on, as new mattresses will often have a lingering manufacturing smell, and this will help it disperse. It is recommended that you air your mattress regularly. This helps moisture to disperse and aids upholstery recovery.

Cleaning

To clean your mattress, use a brush or a vacuum, your mattress should be cleaned regularly. Do not use any detergents or chemicals on your mattress. A mattress protector will prevent damage to your mattress.

Caring for your bed

Avoid positioning your new bed close to a heat source or in prolonged sunlight. Failure to do so may cause excessive colour fading or aageing of the finish. We also recommend that you periodically check the tightness of the legs and other fittings, as they may come loose over time.

Cleaning

General cleaning should be done with a dry cloth and we do not recommend the use of detergents. If you have purchased an upholstered bed or bed frame, we recommend that you gently brush or vacuum regularly. Accumulated dirt will increase the wear and dull the colours.

Storage drawers & Ottomans

Open and close drawer or ottoman machanisms with care and never force them. Ottomans should be opened and closed 4/5 times immediately after assembly with the mattress in place to ensure the gas pistons are fully lubricated.
Storage ages within beds and bed frames are designed to hold lightweight items, such as linen. Please do not overload drawers as this may reduce the lifespan of your product.
