In an age where businesses come and go, achieving 125 years of success is a remarkable feat. Fishpools, nestled in the heart of Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire, stands as a testament to endurance, quality, and unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. As we celebrate this significant milestone, let us journey back in time to explore our story and how it all began.

Fishpools’ beginnings

Ernest Fishpools opened the first Fishpools showroom in 1899 with a loan of £85, where he laid the foundation for what would become the south east’s largest quality furniture store.

By 1902, Fishpools had already begun to expand our presence, acquiring a furniture business located at 162 High Street.

Three years later, in 1905, another milestone was achieved as Fishpools acquired 113 High Street, a location that remains an integral part of the company’s present-day site.

Innovation and growth

The evolution of Fishpools was not only marked by expansion but also by innovation. In 1910, the introduction of horse-drawn deliveries revolutionised the way furniture was transported, showcasing Fishpools’ commitment to efficiency and customer convenience. This dedication to service continued through the years, with the transition from horse-drawn carriages to delivery vans in 1925, further streamlining our delivery process.

Throughout the decades, Fishpools remained steadfast in our commitment to providing quality products and exceptional service. From the release of adverts for timeless items like clothes mangles in 1945, to celebrating our 50th anniversary in 1949, we continued to cement our reputation as a trusted name in home furnishings.

Embracing change and further expansion

The latter part of the 20th century brought new opportunities for growth and expansion.

The opening of the M25 with a junction at Waltham Cross in 1984 proved to be a pivotal moment, bringing increased accessibility and footfall to the area and firmly placing Fishpools on the map.

As Fishpools entered the new millennium, we embraced change while staying true to our heritage. From the opening of the Budget & Outlet store in 2002, to the refurbishment of our premises during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2021, we have consistently adapted to meet the needs of our loyal customers while upholding our core values of quality and excellence.

The present day and beyond

Today, we are still in the same building where it all started and are proud to be celebrating 125 years in the business this spring.

Fishpools stands as the largest quality furniture store in the southeast, a testament to our lovely loyal customers, amazing staff, fantastic suppliers, and our commitment to providing customers with the very best in home furnishings.
