HISTORY OF CALLIGARIS

In 1923 Antonio Calligaris started his small artisanal business by producing the 'Marocca' chair, a typical model of the Manzano area in Friuli. It is characterised by a sturdy wooden frame, the hand-woven rush seat, and the slightly curved legs. Apprentices oversaw painting the rush using natural colours, while women were in charge of weaving the seats with their skilful hands.

The workshop of Antonio Calligaris started to organise production, bringing in wood from the surrounding mountains and straw from the Friulan lagoon. The apprentices of the workshop were entrusted with dying the straw with natural pigments. With few machines in operation, the majority of the work was done manually - mainly by women who wove the seats and put the finishing touches on the chairs. From the 1960’s onwards, the economic boom coincided with the modernization of Calligaris. They introduced automation, becoming a leader in the area known worldwide as “The Chair District” and laying the groundwork for expansion into larger markets. In 1986, Alessandro Calligaris, the third generation of the family took over as president.

Throughout the 90’s the Calligaris furniture range expanded its range with complete furnishing solutions including: chairs, tables, bar stools and sideboards. Wood was no longer the only material used and the company began to work in metal, plastic, leather, and glass. The last decade has been crucial for Calligaris, establishing itself as a truly international company. Calligaris has succeeded in unifying a artisanal tradition that is synonymous with quality, care and Italian style, on the one hand, and the adoption of industrial techniques that has made it a leader in the furniture industry. To date, the Calligaris Group has 600 employees, with subsidiaries in the United States, Japan, Russia, and France and five manufacturing plants, including one in Croatia.
