Choosing the right mattress for your children can mean the difference between them peacefully sleeping through the night and waking up grumpy from a fitful sleep, unprepared for the day ahead. Buying the wrong mattress can even hamper a child’s growth and development.
With the sheer variety of mattresses available, choosing the right one can be hard for parents. At Fishpools, we’ve put together a handy guide to help you make the right choice first time around.
Babies and toddlers
If your child is between 18 months old and three years of age, chances are you’re buying a mattress for their first ‘big bed’. Given they sleep anywhere between 10 and 14 hours a night, allowing plenty of time for bone and brain development, you’ll want to make sure they are properly supported.
Pocket spring mattresses, such as our Copper Seal Mattress and the Fishpool 7000 mattress, offer superb support. In the construction of a pocket sprung mattress, the springs are sewn into separate pockets made from comfortable fabric.
The springs and fabric act in the same way as the shock absorbers in a car, minimising the impact of movement during sleep and maximising comfort. In addition, pocket sprung mattresses don’t retain excess heat, so your little one won’t get too hot during the night.
Children can get restless at night for a variety of reasons. A major contributor is temperature. It’s the eternal frustration of many parents who discover, no matter how low the tog on the duvet or how many windows they leave open, their children are always hot at night and sleep badly as a result.
The mattress is often the overlooked cause.
If your child falls into this category, it might be worth considering a latex foam mattress. Latex mattresses, such as our Dunlopillo Diamond Mattress and our Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign Mattress, are supremely breathable, helping to regulate the body’s temperature and create the perfect conditions for sleep.
They are available in varying degrees of firmness and many are hypoallergenic, so there’s no need to worry about itchy reactions.
When it comes to problem sleepers, it doesn’t get much worse than your average teenager. It seems impossible to get them off to sleep at night and even harder to get them up in the morning.
The teenage years are a crucial stage in a young person’s development; the growth spurts kick in, the brain starts to develop towards adulthood, and the dreaded hormones come into play.
Memory foam gently moulds to their shape, helping to reduce disturbance caused by tossing and turning during sleep, and evolving with their changing body and weight. In addition, the sympathetic support promotes good posture and reduces pressure on growing joints.
For extra comfort
While they are typically seen as the budget option, open coil mattresses can be a superb addition to any child’s bedroom.
Although they might not have a lifespan as long as pocket spring mattresses or memory foam mattresses, they are significantly lighter, making them easy to turn over and move around.
There tend to be around 300 springs in an average open coil mattress, which provides a firm but comforting sleep. We offer an extensive range of open coil mattresses, including our Hewson Mattress and Visco Options Mattress.
You don’t have to be an expert to make the right choice when buying a mattress for your children. Having a starting point can make all the difference.
