Running throughout September, Sleeptember is an exciting initiative from the experts at The Sleep Council to remind us of the healthy benefits of a good night’s sleep.

Like good nutrition and exercise, sleep fulfils a vital role in keeping us healthy and happy. We need a proper night’s sleep to ensure we’re feeling fit, thinking sharply and generally to give us the appetite and enthusiasm to make the most of everyday living.

Among other things, such as ensuring that all gadgets and smartphones are switched off, creating a cosy and inviting bedroom space is key to achieving that all-important good night’s sleep. With this in mind we’ve rounded up a few of our top tips for styling your very own sanctuary of calm…

CHOOSE YOUR STYLE

If you’re looking to upgrade your bed, knowing what style you want is important and will help you to narrow down your choice.

A bed frame will give you more options when it comes to design and those with beautifully ornate detailing will really make an impact. Divans will often come with built-in drawers and are great at maximising bedroom storage. A headboard can then be added to make a style statement.

CREATE YOUR SPACE

Creating a cosy bedroom space is all about the attention to detail, a soft palette and range of textures. Achieving the right atmosphere relies on an awareness of all five senses, so there’s plenty to consider.

To start you’ll need to de-clutter. A calming space has nothing unsightly to divert the eye so get rid of everything that doesn’t belong there and add in suitable storage if you need to. Wardrobes are ideal but also consider complementing these with a beautifully crafted chest of drawers that will also provide a surface to display decorative accessories.”

LIGHT IT UP

The key to bedroom lighting is to introduce a variety of different options. While low-level lighting is the perfect way to prepare your body for sleep, you may want something a little brighter while you get ready.

A combination of wall or ceiling lights and a bedside lamp will help you to find a balance that’s right for you. For lampshades, silk fabrics are perfect for adding a luxurious touch to bedrooms whilst fully blown glass and sculpted metal base designs create a decorative statement.
