MEASURING FOR POLES

First things first, how to hang your pole the right way for you

FINDING YOUR WIDTH

STEP 1

Measure the width of the window.

STEP 2

Add 20-30cm each side of the window to ensure the pole protrudes from each side.

STEP 3

Calculate the measurements and add them together to get your ideal pole length.

FINDING YOUR DROP

STEP 1

Fix your pole at least 15cm above the top of the window frame to ensure no light creeps through.

STEP 2

Measure from of the top of the pole to the point at which the curtain should finish.

STEP 3

To avoid your curtains dragging on the floor/sill, ensure a suitable amount of clearance. If you want them to rest on the floor/sill then add 1-2cm.

You can find poles in either metal or wood and in a wide variety of finishes, creating a more eye-catching effect than tracks.
Finials are a decorative ornament at the end of a curtain pole that help to further decorate and accentuate your look.
For a more traditional look, with the curtain slightly puddled on the floor, you’ll want to add another 5 or 6 centimetres to your length. For a modern, crisp look, have the curtain fall flush with the floor.

CHOOSING A CURTAIN SIZE

STEP 1

Measure the width of your pole

STEP 2

Divide this number in half to find the minimum width for a single curtain (when buying curtains the measurement of the product displayed is for a single curtain rather than the pair).

STEP 3

You now have your minimum curtain size. Depending on personal preference and style, you will need to add width to achieve the desired amount of gather (folds) in your curtain. This can depend on the style chosen.

WHAT IS GATHER?

Every single pair of curtains should have a certain amount of 'gather'

A curtain that has no 'gather' would be a compleately flat piece of fabric stretched across the window.
