In 1923 Antonio Calligaris started his small artisanal business by producing the \"Marocca\" chair, a typical model of the Manzano area in Friuli. It is characterised by a sturdy wooden frame, the hand-woven rush seat and the slightly curved legs. Apprentices were in charge of painting the rush using natural colours, while women were in charge of weaving the seats with their skilful hands.


The workshop of Antonio Calligaris started to organise production, bringing in wood from the surrounding mountains and straw from the Friulan lagoon. The apprentices of the workshop were entrusted with dying the straw with natural pigments. With few machines the majority of the work was done manually mainly by women who wove the seats and put the finishing touches on the chairs.


From the 1960’s the economic boom coincided with the modernization of Calligaris. They introduced atomisation, becoming a leader in the area known worldwide as “The Chair District” and laying the groundwork for expansion into larger markets. In 1986, Alessandro Calligaris, the third generation of the family took over as president.


Throughout the 90’s Calligaris expanded its range with complete furnishing solutions: chairs, tables, furniture, beds, sofas, furnishing and decorative accessories. Wood was no longer the only material used and the company began to work in metal, plastic, leather and glass.


The last decade has been crucial for Calligaris, establishing itself as a truly international company. Focusing on the union between its artisanal tradition, synonymous with quality, care and Italian style and the industrialization that has made it a leader in the furniture industry. To date the Calligaris Group has 600 employees, operating subsidiaries in the United States, Japan, Russia and France and five manufacturing plants, including one in Croatia.
